| Introduction

Jeffrey Rayport heads Marketspace, a research, media, and consulting unit of Monitor Group, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  Currently a faculty member on leave from the Harvard Business School, Rayport's research focuses on the impact of new information technologies on service management and marketing strategies, especially in information-based and knowledge-intensive industries.  As a consultant, Rayport has worked with executives and companies around the world.  His service focuses on working with companies to develop breakthrough service stra-tegies in network-based or digital businesses, involving a wide array of high-tech, media, entertainment, and service firms.
