| Introduction

Michael E.  Porter is the Bishop William Lawrence Univeristy Professor at Harvard University; he is based at the Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts.  Porter was recently named one of the top 50 business intellectuals of our time.  Porter is the author of 16 books and over 60 articles.  His book, Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors, published in 1980, and a companion book, Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance, defined the field.  Professor Porter's 1990 book, The Competitive Adva-ntage of Nations, develops a new theory of how nations, states, and regions compete and their sources of economic prosperity.  The ideas in this book have guided economic policy throughout the world and spurred his innovative and highly regarded work on inner-city competitiveness.  His book, On Competition (1998), includes eleven articles from Harvard Business Review.  The 1996 Harvard Business Review article 'What is Strategy?' is his most recent article on strategy.
