I joined Monitor in 2004 right after graduating from PKU. I chose Monitor among various job offers because of its culture. Monitor has a very strong and unique culture that shapes and transforms everybody working for it, including myself—and I have thoroughly enjoyed my stay here.
The thing I've enjoyed most is the people. Every case team is a family of diverse backgrounds. Intense workloads bring us together and we really are able to enjoy each others' company. I can't imagine a working environment in which you don't like your colleagues. At Monitor, we like each other both as colleagues and as friends.
The other thing I've enjoyed at Monitor is being able to travel to different places. Case work has brought me to most of the provinces in China, as well as foreign countries like Japan, US and India. Sometimes, you end up in a place you've never even thought of. For example, I was able to travel in south India's beautiful Kerala state earlier this year right after an assignment ended in India.
If you ask Monitor people what it takes to succeed here, most people would probably give you two tips: "be proactive" and "be nice".
- Being proactive means greater opportunities and responsibilities. For example, I asked for and received the chance to set up the Beijing office of Grail Research, a subsidiary of Monitor earlier this year. It was an entrepreneurial experience—something totally different from my previous consulting projects. I recruited and trained 15 people, was involved in client development, and helped run the initial projects of Grail China.
- Being nice means you have to have a strong empathy for others and are always willing to help. No one should tell you "OK, this is not my responsibility. You should figure it out yourself." Earlier, when I was faced with a career choice within Monitor, I received a lot of good advice from all of my colleagues, especially those more senior than me. My professional development advisor took me out for lunch a couple of times to discuss it and share his own experiences.
As the Recruiting Manager for the Beijing office, I strongly encourage those top Chinese youth to apply to our company if you think it's a mutually good fit. I guarantee that it will be an exciting journey.
